The Longest Table will return to Mooresville on Sunday, September 27, bringing neighbors together for a free community meal focused on conversation, connection and community.
The event first came to Mooresville in October 2023 through a partnership led by local organizations including United Way of Iredell County, Mooresville Graded School District and community sponsors. The concept was adapted from a global community-building movement created to address social isolation, break down barriers and help neighbors get to know one another. The first local event was held in Statesville through United Way of Iredell County facilitation. The goal is simple: bring people from different income levels, ethnicities and backgrounds together over a free meal and give them an opportunity to connect.
More than 500 people attended the first Longest Table event in Mooresville. A second event was planned for the following year, but Hurricane Helene happened the week before, leading the steering committee to send the food and resources that had already been purchased to Western Carolina. Organizers are now preparing for the third event this September and hope it continues to become a regular community event.
This year’s theme, “The Power of We,” centers on the idea of moving from individual efforts to collective community action. Organizers selected the theme to highlight how unity, shared strength and mutual support can help address local challenges more effectively than any one person or organization working alone. The broader goal of The Longest Table is to build a more connected, empathetic and resilient community by breaking down social, economic and cultural barriers across Iredell County.
Organizers also believe face-to-face connection remains important at a time when so much communication happens through phones and social media. While online discussions can help raise awareness and spread information quickly, an in-person gathering gives neighbors the chance to meet people of different ages, socio-economic backgrounds and walks of life whom they might not otherwise encounter.
Helping make those conversations easier are the event’s table hosts. Organizers describe them as the social anchors of The Longest Table, helping turn a row of strangers into a welcoming group of neighbors. As guests arrive along Blue Devil Boulevard, table hosts greet them, introduce themselves and help those who come alone or arrive late feel included in the conversation.
Some of those connections have continued long after the tables were cleared. Organizers shared the story of one participant who ran into a tablemate about a month later and spent an hour sitting on a bench outside a grocery store catching up. The person told them, “you are the only person I’ve spoken to all week!” Organizers said their hope is that those kinds of connections continue and encourage people to reach out to others in everyday life.
Behind the scenes, an event of this size takes extensive planning and the help of volunteers, businesses and community organizations. Organizers generally plan for about 1,000 guests and estimate that approximately 175 volunteers are needed to support the event. Committee members are also volunteers and come from across Iredell County. Iredell Health System prepares the food, while the Mooresville High School cafeteria provides the space to prepare the meal.
This year’s Platinum Presenting Sponsor is Iredell Health Systems. Gold Sponsors are Mooresville Graded School District, Cheney Brothers and Coca-Cola Consolidated. Silver Sponsors include Fifth Third Bank, Publix Super Markets and Piedmont HealthCare. Bronze Sponsors are Kevin Harvick Golf Carts, Town of Mooresville, First Baptist Church Mooresville, Williamson Chapel UMC and Jo Hayes Images. Table sponsors include Cavin Cook Funeral Home & Crematory, Sight & Sound, I-CARE, Iredell County Partnership for Young Children, Make Camps Safer in Memory of Heaven’s 27, Niagara Bottling Company, Carolinas Asian Chamber of Commerce and Victory Press Printing. Organizers said the event would not be possible without the financial and volunteer support of these community partners.
As Mooresville continues to grow, organizers see The Longest Table as one way to bring longtime residents and newcomers together. The event is designed for people of all ages, backgrounds and walks of life. Business owners, teachers, local government workers, healthcare providers and nonprofit leaders sit alongside the residents they serve, sharing the same family-style meal at the same table.
Families will also find activities beyond the meal. A Kid Zone will include face painting, games, balloon animals and free books, while resource tables will offer information about nonprofit organizations throughout Iredell County. For anyone hesitant to attend alone, organizers say each section of the table will have a designated table host to introduce guests and help guide conversation. The atmosphere is intended to be relaxed and welcoming, with guests able to participate as much or as little as they feel comfortable.
At the end of the day, organizers hope guests leave with more than a meal. They hope people walk away with new connections, a stronger sense of belonging, a renewed perspective about their neighbors and inspiration to become more involved in the community.
As organizers put it, “Ultimately, the goal is for the connection felt along Blue Devil Boulevard to spill over into everyday life, making Mooresville a more connected, resilient, and compassionate place to live long after the tables are packed away.”
This year’s event will also include music and conversation along with the free meal. Organizers shared,
“The people will be amazing – and we meet new people every year! You should come meet them too! There will be music, and conversation – not to mention an amazing delicious FREE meal! How can it get any better!”
The Longest Table will be held Sunday, September 27, 2026, at 659 E. Center Avenue in Mooresville. Registration opens at 12:30 p.m., and the community meal begins at 1 p.m. Admission is free, but registration is required so organizers can prepare the correct amount of food.
