Mooresville Middle School Red Imps Dominate Season

Mooresville, NC – The Mooresville Middle School Red Imps wrestling team concluded an undefeated dual meet season under the guidance of Coach Rob Petit Jr., along with the invaluable contributions of Assistant Coaches Brian Freitas and Pepere Petit. This success was achieved through a combination of discipline, hard work, and an unwavering commitment to improvement.

“We had a special group of wrestlers this season at MMS,” said Coach Petit Jr.

“There were a total of 20 eighth graders and 35 total kids on the team. We went 13-0 dual meet record and placed 2nd Team Runners up at the Tri County Conference tournament. That MMS hosted this weekend. Congratulations to all the medal winners, said Coach Petit Jr.”

“The key factors were discipline, hard work, and a shared commitment to 1% improvement,” said Coach Petit Jr. “The athletes bought into the process, showed up to practice ready to work, and supported one another on and off the mat. Our coaching staff also worked hard to get the kids in shape!”

Navigating challenges like injuries and balancing academics with athletics was crucial. “Every season comes with its share of challenges,” Coach Petit Jr. explained. “Our wrestlers stayed focused by sticking to their routines and leaning on each other for support. When someone faced adversity, the rest of the team rallied around them. We emphasized mental toughness and approached every match one at a time.”

Memorable moments abounded, including the impressive performances of younger wrestlers in critical matches and the electrifying atmosphere during team duals. “One of the most memorable moments was watching our younger wrestlers step up in critical matches and perform beyond expectations,” Coach Petit Jr. shared. “Another highlight was seeing the team cheer each other on during close duals—there’s nothing quite like that energy. Of course, finishing the season undefeated was unforgettable, and retaining the Mooresville Cup with a win over Selma Burke.”

The team’s performance at the Tri-County Conference tournament served as a testament to their growth and development. “The tournament was a culmination of months of hard work and growth,” Coach Petit Jr. stated. “Every wrestler improved technically and mentally throughout the season, and their performance at the tournament showcased that progress. We saw wrestlers adapt to tough opponents, execute strategies under pressure, and display resilience in challenging matches. It was a testament to their dedication and willingness to improve. We had 6 wrestlers in the finals. 3 Champions and 3 Second place.”

Coach Petit Jr. has fostered a team culture built on respect, accountability, and a strong sense of camaraderie. “Our team culture is built on respect, accountability, and a sense of family,” emphasized Coach Petit Jr.

“We are a true Team. Together Everyone Achieves More. We emphasize the importance of showing up for one another, giving maximum effort, and maintaining a positive attitude. Hard work and integrity are non-negotiables, and we stress that success is a byproduct of doing things the right way—on the mat, in the classroom, and in life.”

Balancing individual and team goals is key to the team’s success. “It’s all about finding synergy between the two,” Coach Petit Jr. explained. “We focus on individual development and set personalized goals for each wrestler, but we remind them that their personal success contributes to the team’s success. When athletes see how their effort impacts the group, they naturally invest in the team while pursuing their own growth.”

Senior wrestlers play an invaluable role in mentoring younger teammates. “Our senior wrestlers are critical to the team’s success—they set the tone for work ethic, discipline, and leadership,” said Coach Petit Jr. “Captains Gavin Bryant, Kai Lindsay, Avett Lindsay, Michael Freitas and Grayson Parks lead by example, showing younger wrestlers how to prepare, compete, and handle both wins and losses. They also take time to mentor and encourage the younger athletes, fostering a sense of belonging and passing down the team values.”

The team’s success has had a positive ripple effect throughout the school and community. “The team’s success has generated a lot of excitement and pride throughout the school,” Coach Petit Jr. noted. “It’s brought students, staff, and the community together to celebrate something positive. The energy at our matches and the support from classmates have been incredible, and I believe it’s inspired other students to get involved and aim for excellence in their own activities.”

Coach Petit Jr. hopes this season’s success serves as an inspiration for all student-athletes. “I hope it shows that hard work, dedication, and teamwork can lead to incredible accomplishments,” Coach Petit Jr. said. “Our success isn’t just about winning—it’s about the process, the bonds we’ve built, and the lessons we’ve learned along the way. I want other student-athletes to see that success is within their reach if they commit to their goals and support one another.”

The Mooresville Middle School Red Imps wrestling team’s undefeated season is a testament to their talent, dedication, and the positive impact of a strong team culture under the leadership of Coach Petit Jr., along with the invaluable contributions of Assistant Coaches Brian Freitas and Pepere Petit. Their success has not only brought pride to the school but also serves as a valuable lesson for student-athletes across the community.
