North Carolina Provisions Company, a unique store dedicated to showcasing the best of North Carolina’s artisans and producers, is quickly becoming a beloved local destination. Founded on a passion for supporting small businesses and celebrating the state’s rich heritage, the store offers a curated selection of handcrafted goods, from locally roasted coffee to handcrafted jewelry.

Owner Heather Driskell was inspired to open North Carolina Provisions Company after years of exploring the state and encountering the incredible talent and craftsmanship of its artisans. “I have always been a huge supporter of small businesses and love going to festivals and craft fairs throughout the state,” she recalls. “I also love getting in the car and driving until I find a cute town to explore the food, breweries, shops, and whatever else it may have to offer. One day, while visiting Carolina Beach, the idea came to me, which has evolved into what we are today.”

The store’s commitment to “North Carolina-made” is unwavering. “I am kind of a stickler when it comes to the North Carolina-made items that I offer,” Driskell emphasizes. “I do a lot of research and ask a lot of questions. I have actually sent items back to the vendor because the packaging said ‘Made in China.’ They designed the product in NC but sent it off to be manufactured somewhere else.” She continues, “I am a member of Got To Be NC, which helps with finding brands that are certified by their regulations. I am very particular when it comes to ingredients in edible items, skincare products, candles, etc.. I want to ensure that I am bringing the best quality to the consumer.”

Beyond simply selling products, North Carolina Provisions Company aims to contribute to the local economy and community. “My goal has always been to bring any and everything that is made in North Carolina to the consumer to show what this state truly has to offer,” Driskell explains. “I try to only carry products that you cannot find in big box stores. I want to help my neighbor or the small mom-and-pop companies that can’t mass-produce their products.”

When asked about selecting products, Driskell shares, “I am asked this question often, and my response is always at my own discretion. If I believe in the product and the creator, it helps make the decision very easy. I love bringing unique items to the store, but I also need everyday items too. You never know what someone is looking for, so I try to have at least one item for everyone.”

“Staying updated on new products is an ongoing process,” Driskell explains. “Social media plays a key role, but I also cherish the personal connections I build. I still enjoy traveling across the state when I have the time, but social media helps me stay connected when I can’t. Whether it’s interacting with customers in the store, responding to emails, or connecting with vendors online, those personal interactions are invaluable. I also subscribe to Our State Magazine, which provides a different perspective on the vibrant landscape of North Carolina.”

Driskell recognizes the importance of her store to the revitalization of downtown Mooresville. “Broad Street is part of Downtown Mooresville and it seems like folks forget that or don’t even realize that shops are on this street,” she explains. “My goal, as well as other business owners on Broad Street, is to bring awareness to that fact. Downtown Mooresville is more than just a block or two of Main Street, but multiple blocks set between two Mills that are original to this amazing town. I love Downtown Mooresville which is why I decided to move my business to this town.”

Collaboration is key for Driskell. “I have made some amazing friends with business owners across the entire state, and that is one thing that I absolutely love about my job,” she shares. “The connections that I make daily bring me new knowledge and new ways to celebrate others. I try to always promote others, not just my business, especially since my business is based on promoting other companies by selling their products. I try to donate my time or gifts to local organizations. I try to do events within the Mooresville community to bring awareness to the store and Downtown. It takes a village, and that is exactly what the small business community is.”

When asked about the impact of supporting local businesses, Driskell emphasizes the ripple effect it creates within the community. “Everything! So much more of an impact than folks realize,” she says. “My store is only North Carolina-made products, that money goes right back into our community and state. For example, today, I purchased pottery from someone who only uses NC clay. That is a huge win of support for our state! Supporting local businesses is helping your neighbor, your friend, and your family. Keep your hard-earned money local and reap the benefits of having a support system within your community and town by growing it.”

Educating customers is a crucial part of Driskell’s mission. “Once they step foot in the store, I always try to educate someone on at least one item that they see on the shelves,” she explains. “Everything that is offered is made in small batches and not mass-produced. What most may not realize is how many jobs and dreams you are supporting of those people who may be your family, friends, or neighbors. Your money stays in the state and the community.”

When asked about popular products, Driskell shares, “That is a tough one. But if I had to narrow it down, I would say the Holy Cookie Dough, Mama Brown Goat Soap, Honeysuckle Hill Creamed Honey, Cindy’s Track Crackers, Black Powder Coffee, or the beer cooler.”

Creating a welcoming environment is paramount for Driskell. “I truly hope their entire shopping experience when they walk in the door is a pleasant one,” she says. “The goal is to offer a warm, homely, positive vibe. I try to always greet and educate each shopper. It is the easiest job to have out of the many being a small business owner, especially when I love every product and brand that is offered.”

Driskell values the feedback she receives from her customers. “I have only received positive feedback, which is a blessing,” she shares. “I truly try to carry something for everyone, no matter their budget. I am always open to learning about new products and love receiving feedback.”

When asked about challenges, Driskell acknowledges the realities of running a small business. “Honestly, I don’t have challenges with finding North Carolina-made products. Wanting to buy everything I find and fall in love with, yes, that’s a problem of mine,” she says with a laugh. “The real and behind-the-scenes challenges, like any other small business, come from getting the word out that we are here and open, even with social media and advertising or the battle with finding affordable storefronts to have a small business.”

Driskell offers valuable advice to aspiring entrepreneurs. “Do it! I will always encourage an entrepreneur and help in any way that I can,” she says. “I am an open book when it comes to my business and love to see others succeed, especially if it is helping our community and state. I will always share the good, the bad, and the ugly because every business owner should understand what they are stepping into.”
