Sometimes the best stories are the ones that remind us what community really looks like, and this past Saturday at Liberty Park was one of those moments.
It all started about a month ago with a simple birthday wish.
Viktor, who lives in Mooresville with his family, had received a new football for Christmas and quickly fell in love with playing catch in the front yard. He had also been watching all the games leading up to the Super Bowl, so when asked what he wanted for his 10th birthday, he knew exactly what to say… a football party at Liberty Park.

There was just one challenge. His family didn’t know any football players. So Viktor’s mom, Paula Viola, reached out to the moms on the Mooresville Moms Facebook page, hoping someone might know a few players who would be willing to come out and play a game with him.
That is when something special happened.
Samantha Epps responded, sharing that she knew seven young men who would love to come celebrate with Viktor. These young men are all football players from a local private Christian school, and on Saturday, they didn’t just show up… they SHOWED UP.

They walked right up to Viktor together, shook his hand, wished him a happy birthday, and told him they were there to play football with him. Viktor had no idea they were coming, and the surprise on his face said it all.
One of the players, Jamarion Morrison, brought something extra special with him. Holding a pair of cleats, he explained their meaning to Viktor. They had been given to him by Gavin Gibson, who is making his way to the NFL. Gibson was a four year starting defensive back at UNC and had honored Jamarion with those limited edition cleats.

In a moment Viktor will never forget, Jamarion handed them to him.
While Viktor has a few years before he will be able to wear them, they will certainly be kept safe.
Then it was time for football.

On the field in front of the stage at Liberty Park, blue Gatorade bottles became the sidelines and end zones. Viktor and his friend Luke were named team captains, carefully choosing their teams as everyone lined up and got ready to play.
What happened next was something no one could have planned.

With the rain from earlier in the week, the field was wet, and from the very first play, someone slipped and fell. That set the tone for the entire game.
There was sliding, falling, and nonstop laughter. Shoes went flying. Some players ditched their shoes completely and ran through the grass in their socks. There were incredible throws, big catches, interceptions, and touchdowns. Viktor scored, and the laughter only grew louder.

And what stood out most was how these young men played. They made sure every child who joined in felt included and safe, creating a game that everyone could be part of.
By the end, no one was keeping score.
Because it didn’t matter.
What mattered were the smiles, the muddy clothes, and the laughter that filled the park that afternoon. Viktor loved every minute of it.
There was also gratitude. Gratitude for Samantha Epps for making the connection. Gratitude for the young men who showed up with kindness and intention. And gratitude for the others who joined in from the basketball court, turning the game into something even bigger.
And just before everyone gathered to sing happy birthday, the sun came out.

If you had to capture what makes Mooresville special in a single moment, this might be it. A group of people coming together, cheering each other on, laughing without hesitation, and simply enjoying being present.
Before the day ended, everyone shared pizza and Gatorade, and there is already a promise to show up for those young men at their games, just as they showed up for Viktor.

Because here in Mooresville, community is not just something we talk about.
It is something we live.
