Mooresville Runner Heads to Boston Marathon, Raises Over $20,000 for Cancer Research

A Mooresville resident is heading to one of the most iconic races in the world, and he’s doing it with a powerful purpose.

Jarrod Liston will take on the 2026 Boston Marathon on April 20, representing TargetCancer Foundation after raising more than $20,000 in support of the organization’s mission to fight rare cancers. Earning a spot in the Boston Marathon is an achievement in itself, but for Jarrod, this run is about much more than the miles.

His journey is deeply personal.

Jarrod has seen the impact of cancer up close, with his aunt, uncle, and grandmother all facing battles with the disease. But it was the loss of one of his closest friends, Braedon Hensel, that continues to drive him forward. Braedon was just 22 years old when he passed away after a courageous fight with Ewing Sarcoma, a rare form of cancer.

Those who knew Braedon remember him not only as a talented athlete, but as someone who faced every challenge with strength, resilience, and an inspiring spirit. Jarrod says that legacy is what fuels him as he prepares for Boston.

“Braedon was an incredible young man, a remarkable athlete, and an even better person,” Jarrod said.

Running as part of Team TCF26, Jarrod is helping raise awareness and critical funding for the TargetCancer Foundation, which supports research, patients, and families impacted by rare cancers.

Now a new father, Jarrod says his motivation has only grown stronger. With the recent birth of his daughter, his goal is simple but powerful: to help create a future where fewer families have to experience the pain of losing a loved one to cancer.

“Every step I take in Boston will be for my friend, for my family, and for everyone touched by this disease,” he shared.

As race day approaches, Jarrod’s story is a reminder of how one person’s determination can turn heartbreak into hope, and how a community can rally behind a meaningful cause.
