Girl Scouts and Goodwill Industries Give Back Through Annual Community Service Project “Good Turn for Goodwill”

1,681 donation bags were collected by 839 Girl Scouts and contributed to their local Goodwill donation centers across central and western North Carolina as part of the organizations’ annual partnership and community service project.

Each year on October 1, Girl Scouts Carolinas Peaks to Piedmont (GSCP2P) kicks off “Good Turn for Goodwill” with the support of Goodwill Industries of Central North Carolina, Goodwill Industries of Northwest North Carolina and Goodwill Industries of the Southern Piedmont. The yearly service project teaches girls about their employment and training programs and how the donations they give to the organization help to support these efforts.

“Thanks to our local Girl Scout troops, thousands of pounds of donations will be sold in Goodwill stores to support programs that help local people find hope, opportunity and jobs,” said Elaine Loyack, CEO of GSCP2P. “Through this annual project, our girls are learning just how much their contributions mean to local communities and the amazing impact we can have on our neighbors.”

The Girl Scouts collected gently used clothing, toys, books, electronics and other household items. Troops also had the opportunity to tour their local Goodwill donation centers and processing facilities. Girls learned how donated items are reused or recycled rather than sent to landfills, and how Goodwill uses these donations to fund job training, employment services and community programs.

“I learned that the money raised helps people who need to get back on their feet,” said a Girl Scout who joined the experience. “Goodwill sells items so they can have the funds to train people and help them find jobs.”
